You Are Still Becoming

Growth is a journey, not a destination. Many people feel stuck or incomplete, as if they should have reached their full potential by now. Yet, the truth is that becoming who you are meant to be is a continuous process. The Bible offers a powerful reminder of this in Philippians 1:6 (NLT):

"And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns."

This verse encourages us to trust the ongoing process of transformation. It reassures us that we are not alone in our growth and that the work of becoming is far from over.

Understanding the Scripture

Philippians 1:6 highlights several key ideas:

  • God initiates the good work: The transformation in our lives starts with God. He plants the seed of change and purpose within us.

  • The work is ongoing: Growth is not instant. It unfolds over time, through experiences, challenges, and learning.

  • God will complete the work: The process will reach its fulfillment. God remains faithful to finish what He started.

  • The final completion is linked to Christ’s return: This points to a future hope and ultimate restoration.

This verse offers hope and patience. It reminds us that even when we feel incomplete or imperfect, the process of becoming is active and guided by a loving presence.

Why We Feel Like We Are Not Enough

Many people struggle with feelings of inadequacy or impatience with their progress. This can happen for several reasons:

  • Comparing ourselves to others: Social media and society often highlight success stories without showing the struggles behind them.

  • Expecting quick results: We live in a culture that values instant gratification, but personal growth takes time.

  • Focusing on failures: Mistakes and setbacks can make us doubt our potential.

  • Ignoring the process: We want to see the finished product but forget that growth happens in small, often invisible steps.

Recognizing these feelings is the first step to embracing the truth that you are still becoming.

How to Embrace the Process of Becoming

Here are practical ways to live out the message of Philippians 1:6 in your daily life:

1. Trust the Journey

Understand that growth is a process. Trust that the changes you desire are happening, even if you cannot see immediate results. Reflect on past experiences where progress was slow but steady.

2. Be Patient with Yourself

Allow yourself grace. Growth involves mistakes and setbacks. Instead of harsh self-criticism, practice self-compassion. Remember that becoming takes time.

3. Stay Connected to Your Source of Strength

For those who believe, staying connected to God through prayer, meditation, or scripture reading can provide encouragement and guidance. This connection reminds you that you are not alone in your journey.

4. Celebrate Small Wins

Recognize and celebrate small steps forward. These moments build momentum and reinforce your progress.

5. Learn from Challenges

View difficulties as opportunities to grow. Each challenge can teach resilience, patience, and new skills.

Real-Life Examples of Becoming

  • An artist developing their style: Many famous artists took years to find their unique voice. Their early work may have seemed rough, but persistence led to mastery.

  • A student learning a new skill: Learning a language or instrument requires practice and patience. Progress happens gradually, often with frustration along the way.

  • A person healing from past wounds: Emotional healing is rarely quick. It involves ongoing effort, support, and time.

These examples show that becoming is a natural part of life, not a sign of failure.

The Hope in Philippians 1:6

This scripture offers hope that the work God began in you will not be abandoned. It encourages you to keep moving forward, knowing that your growth has purpose and direction. The promise that the work will be completed reminds us that our current state is not the final chapter.

Moving Forward with Confidence

You are still becoming. This truth frees you from the pressure to be perfect now. It invites you to embrace your journey with patience and faith. Keep trusting the process, stay connected to your source of strength, and celebrate your progress. Your story is unfolding, and the best is yet to come.

-Stay Young. Stay Humble.
